| Students to Receive Assessment Scores Soon |
Third, eighth and 10th-grade students who recently completed the Kansas state reading and math assessments will be receiving their scores much quicker than in the past. Individual scores for the students that took the assessments will be mailed to their homes. The initial results will only provide the number of questions the students answered correctly, out of the total number questions. Students will not be told how their scores compare to scores of other students. Schools also will receive the students' tests scores. "We're starting to get a feeling about how well we did," Wendt said. "We feel very good about the initial result." Matthew Wendt, assistant superintendent for USD 250, says that along with new assessments for 2006, new performance levels also are being determined. These performance levels will allow schools and students to see how they compare to other schools and other students. After test scores throughout the state have been determined, performance levels will be set. The schools and individuals performance levels will be revealed in the fall. Exemplary will be the highest performance level followed by advanced, proficient and basic, with unsatisfactory being the lowest performance level. "This part of the assessment will wet us know how students are doing," Wendt said. "It's an important measuring stick." Wendt says the assessments will also be assessed and some questions may be added or removed. "There will be a lot of analysis done," Wendt said. "The end result, we're hopeful, is a quality assessment." Mike Philpot, Pittsburg High School principal, said Pittsburg High School will be part of a educational research project that is taking place nation-wide. Representatives will be at PHS on Thursday to speak with a variety of senior students and will select some students to research further. The research, which will take place next week, will look at the students' family and previous education to determine early brain development.
