Construction of Mallatt Center should begin soon

Construction on the Megan Mallatt Activity Center should start soon, now that the Pittsburg USD 250 Foundation has signed a contractor.

Central Building Inc. landed the bid for a base contract sum of $1,895,135, close to $200,000 more than the original estimate of $1.7 million for the addition to Pittsburg High School. The contract comes two and a half months after the center's groundbreaking on Aug. 31.

"They can start up anytime," said USD 250 Superintendent Gary Price. "I expect that I'll be driving out there one day and will just see them at work. I don't know exactly when."

The 25,000-square-foot facility will be constructed on the west side of PHS. It will feature a dance studio, a second gymnasium for PHS, a wrestling practice room, weight room, locker rooms for athletic events and for officials and public restrooms.

The center was able to receive a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant because the roof of the building will be outfitted to allow use as a storm shelter. The $1.895 million is how much the project is expected to cost following the grant.

"I think there were two things that raised up the price," Price said. "One was that they added storm shelter. The cost locally would be about $75,000. Then, the rest of it is inflation because of time - we made up those figures back in the spring."

The center was funded through private donations, and close to $2 million was donated by the Pittsburg community.

The center is named for Megan Mallatt, Keith and Brenda's daughter, and a former PHS student who died in a February 2004 car accident. Mallatt was involved in several activities in school, and was captain of both the volleyball team and pep squad.
