USD 250 adopts technology plan |
After months of meetings, Pittsburg USD 250 officially has a three-year technology plan. USD 250 board members voted unanimously to accept a three-year district technology plan that had been in the works for months under a 12 person technology committee. The plan calls for three goals, each with multiple objectives. The three goals are to: Enhance student learning across the curriculum using technology tools and resources to transform the learning process from teacher centered to student learning centered, enhance the abilities of staff to use technology tools and resources to carry out the school improvement process and increase school-to-community communication using technology. The committee, made up of administrators, library media specialists, teachers and technology staff, reached consensus earlier this school year on how to enhance technology throughout the district using national, state and local guidelines. The district also wanted to implement a comprehensive K-12 computer technology program so that students would be prepared to meet the Kansas Board of Regents requirements. Members of the committee said that it would be easier on teachers because they would know what level of technology incoming students had been exposed to. Each grade level has a specific set of standards and indicators to meet, as chosen by the committee. Also included is this year's PowerSchool technological campaign, which allows parents to view their student's grades, attendance and other statistics online. The program has recently kicked off in all schools, and informational meetings will be held in the next month. Board members voted 6 to 0 in favor of the plan. Scott Howard was the only absent board member. In other business, board members: * Voted to adopt uniform logos for all of the Pittsburg USD 250 schools. The district had numerous discussions considering the "Dragon" and "P" used as logos for USD 250 and its schools. All district schools will now use the logos, including the "globe" logo for the district. These may be made available in electronic form or hard copy to each school and its organizations, clubs and groups. Use of any other representations, logos or mascots for USD 250 and/or its schools must receive specific authorization from the board or the superintendent as a representative of the board. * Read over two new policies about college credits for USD 250 students. One of the policies will narrow the number of colleges from which students may earn college credit. The schools would be restricted on a local basis, allowing students to earn credit from Pittsburg State University, Fort Scott Community College or Labette County Community College, classes that students may be released to attend during the regular school day. The other policy will deal with providing online learning opportunities through accredited institutions. The policies will go to a vote at the January board meeting.
