Benchmark 1

Singing in groups a varied repertoire of music.

Indicator 1

The student will be able to sing accurately with appropriate timbre, diction, posture, and good breath control throughout singing ranges.

Indicator 2

The student will be able to sing and play with expression and technical accuracy a repertoire of literature, including some songs performed from memory.

Indicator 3

The student will be able to sing and play music representing diverse genres and cultures.

Indicator 4

The student will be able to sing in groups, blending timbres, matching dynamic levels and responding to cues of conductor.

Indicator 5

The student will be able to sing ostinatos, partner songs, rounds, and three-part music.

Benchmark 2

Reading and Notating Music.

Indicator 1

The student will be able to read whole, half, quarter, eighth, sixteenth, and dotted notes and rests in 2/4, 2/4, 4/4, 6/8, 3/8 and alla breve meter signatures.

Indicator 2

The student will be able to read at sight simple melodies in both treble and bass clef.

Indicator 3

The student will be able to identify and define standard notation symbols for pitch, rhythm, dynamics, tempo, articulation, and expression.

Indicator 4

The student will be able to identify key signatures (major).

Indicator 5

The student will be able to identify interval by ear and sight.

Benchmark 3

Analyzing and evaluating music and music performances.

Indicator 1

The student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of basic principles of meter, rhythm, tonality, and intervals in analysis of music.

Indicator 2

The student will be able to identify the sounds of various voicing within an ensemble.

Indicator 3

The student will be able to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of own and others' performances by applying specific criteria appropriate for the style of music and offer constructive suggestions for improvement.

Indicator 4

The student will be able to use appropriate terminology in explaining music, music notation, musical instruments/voices, and music performances.

Indicator 5

The student will be able to explain, using appropriate terminology, their personal preferences for specific musical works and styles.

Benchmark 4

Expressing music through movement.

Indicator 1

The student will be able to demonstrate pulse through physical movement while singing.

Indicator 2

The student will be able to use movement to enhance appropriate repertoire.

Benchmark 5

Understanding relationships between music, history, culture, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts.

Indicator 1

The student will be exposed to aural examples of music from various historical periods or cultures.

Indicator 2

The student will be able to describe distinguishing characteristics of music from various styles and cultures.

Indicator 3

The student will be able to identify various uses of music in our daily lives.

Indicator 4

The student will be able to demonstrate audience appropriate behavior for the context and style of music.

Indicator 5

The student will be able to describe ways in which the principles and subject matter of other disciplines taught in the school are interrelated with those of music.
