To prepare students for entry level jobs or additional education in the business industry.

Benchmark 1

OPERATING SYSTEMS AND HARDWARE - Hardware Skills

Indicator 1

The student will enter commands from the keyboard, mouse, or other input device.

Indicator 2

The student will turn a machine on and off if necessary.

Indicator 3

The student will identify the operating system type and version.

Benchmark 2

OPERATING SYSTEMS AND HARDWARE - File Management Skills

Indicator 1

The student will create a directory of subdirectory (or folder).

Indicator 2

The student will find a file located on a hard disk or other storage device.

Indicator 3

The student will copy (move) files from one directory to another directory.

Indicator 4

The student will rename or delete files and directories (or folders).

OPERATING SYSTEMS AND HARDWARE - Diskette Usage Skills

Indicator 1

The student will copy files to and from a diskette.

Indicator 2

The student will format a diskette.

COMPUTER SOFTWARE - Word Processing Skills

Indicator 1

The student will launch a word processor.

Indicator 2

The student will create a new document, such as a friendly letter or a memo to an employer.

Indicator 3

The student will enter text (from a news story or other source) and change the margins, paragraph format, and page numbering in a way that is required by a teacher.

Indicator 4

The student will change text styles, such as a font, type size, or other special characteristics.

Indicator 5

The student will save the document to a disk.

Indicator 6

The student will print the document.

Benchmark 5

COMPUTER SOFTWARE - Edit and Revise Documents

Indicator 1

The student will open a saved document that is stored on a hard disk or floppy disk.

Indicator 2

The student will check for spelling errors using the word processing spell checker.

Indicator 3

The student will check for major grammatical errors using a given grammar check program.

Indicator 4

The student will rearrange sentences or paragraphs, perhaps by cut and paste methods.

Benchmark 6

COMPUTER SOFTWARE - Spreadsheet Skills

Indicator 1

The student will launch a spreadsheet program.

Indicator 2

The student will create a spreadsheet whose first row is the set of numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10; and whose second row is the squares of these numbers 1, 4, 9, 16, etc. Create this second row by using formulas.

Indicator 3

The student will experiment with the spreadsheet to investigate a problem. Values in cells or formulas can be changed to reach a desired result, such as making a simple budget to fit within a predetermined amount of money).

Indicator 4

The student will change cell text attributes.

Indicator 5

The student will change cell number attributes.

Indicator 6

The student will insert/delete a row into/from a spreadsheet.

Indicator 7

The student will copy a formula down a column or across a row. (This formula should have both relative and absolute references.)

Indicator 8

The student will copy a formula from one cell and paste it into another cell.

Indicator 9

The student will create a chart from a spreadsheet.

Indicator 10

The student will save the spreadsheet to a disk.

Indicator 11

The student will print a spreadsheet in usual form.

Indicator 12

The student will print a wide spreadsheet in landscape form.

Benchmark 7

COMPUTER SOFTWARE - Database Software Skills

Indicator 1

The student will create a database of names and addresses from a list on a paper. Each record is to include name and address of an individual. Have separate fields for name, street, city, state and zip.

Indicator 2

The student will sort a database on any field in any order.

Indicator 3

The student will create a report. (set up a report which filters out some of the data.)

Indicator 4

The student will print a report.

Benchmark 8

COMPUTER SOFTWARE - Presentation Software

Indicator 1

The student will create a presentation document that meets certain requirements e.g. create a title slide according to a particular example or prepare a bullet list).

Indicator 2

The student will use special effects (e.g. changing slides).

Indicator 3

The student will print the slides created.

Benchmark 9

COMPUTER SOFTWARE - Multi-Tasking

Indicator 1

The student will open several programs at once.

Indicator 2

The student will create a short letter on a word processor.

Indicator 3

The student will while the word processor is still active, create a spreadsheet.

Indicator 4

The student will copy the spreadsheet entries into the word processor.

Indicator 5

The student will print the resulting letter with the spreadsheet inserted.

Benchmark 10

NETWORKING AND THE INTERNET - File Transfer Skills

Indicator 1

The student will connect to another computer and upload and download files (in any number of formats such as ASCII, binary, or binhex).

Indicator 2

The student will connect to a network or other computer where an email account resides.

Indicator 3

The student will, using that email connection, receive, save, decode attachments and reply to email.

Indicator 4

The student will create email messages and attach a file to the email message.

Benchmark 11

NETWORKING AND THE INTERNET - Internet Skills

Indicator 1

The student will access a site on the world wide web and copy a file from it to disk.

Indicator 2

The student will follow hypertext links from that site to several others and bookmark the path.

Benchmark 12

SOCIAL AND ETHICAL ISSUES IN COMPUTING - Principles of Ethical Behavior

Indicator 1

The student will demonstrate consideration and mutual respect in the use of computing resources.

Indicator 2

The student will cooperate with peers and teachers.

Indicator 3

The student will abide by a code of honesty and integrity.

Indicator 4

The student will accept responsibility for your own work.

Indicator 5

The student will work cooperatively as a team member.

Indicator 6

The student will follow rules and procedures of the network or systems that are used.

Indicator 7

The student will consider the change in social and work environments that are likely to result from usage of computing technology.

Benchmark 13

SOCIAL AND ETHICAL ISSUES IN COMPUTING - Ethical and Legal Issues

Indicator 1

The student will examine ethical and legal issues of privacy, copyright, and computer crime.

Indicator 2

The student will access email and Internet user policies from companies, organizations and other entities.
