Benchmark 1

Singing and/or playing alone and in groups a varied repertoire of music.

Indicator 1

The student will be able to sing in 4 or more parts.

Indicator 2

The student will be able to sing accurately, independently, and confidently in small and large ensembles with good posture and good breath control.

Indicator 3

The student will be able to demonstrate technical skills (e,g, tone quality, intonation, rhythm, diction, breathing techniques, phrasing).

Indicator 4

The student will be able to demonstrate sensitivity to balance, blend, response to the gestures of the conductor and the overall sound of the ensemble.

Indicator 5

The student will be able to perform expressively a large repertoire of music representing diverse genres and styles.

Indicator 6

The student will be able to demonstrate range, flexibility and agility.

Benchmark 2

Reading and Notating Music.

Indicator 1

The student will be able to demonstrate the ability to read a vocal score up to four staves.

Indicator 2

The student will be able to read at sight simple melodies in both treble and bass clef.

Indicator 3

The student will be able to identify and define standard notation symbols for pitch, rhythm, dynamics, tempo, articulation, and expression.

Indicator 4

The student will be able to identify key signatures (major modes).

Indicator 5

The student will be able to identify interval by ear and sight.

Benchmark 3

Analyzing and evaluating music and music performances.

Indicator 1

The student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the technical vocabulary of music.

Indicator 2

The student will be able to evaluate a performance or composition/arrangement by using specific criteria.

Indicator 3

The student will be able to demonstrate specific criteria for making informed, critical evaluations and apply the criteria to their personal participation in music.

Benchmark 4

Expressing music through movement.

Indicator 1

The student will be able to demonstrate pulse through physical movement while singing.

Indicator 2

The student will be able to use movement to enhance appropriate repertoire.

Benchmark 5

Understanding relationships between music, history, culture, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts.

Indicator 1

The student will be able to identify and explain the stylistic features of a given musical era.

Indicator 2

The student will be able to identify and describe roles of musicians in various music settings and cultures.

Indicator 3

The student will be able to demonstrate audience appropriate behavior for the context and style of music.

Indicator 4

The student will be able to identify various uses of music in our daily lives.

Indicator 5

The student will be able to explain ways in which the principles and subject matter of various disciplines are interrelated with music.
