Desktop Publishing (DTP) Basics
Indicator 1
The student will identify documents that are appropriate for
DTP.
Indicator 2
The student will know the basic functions and uses of a mouse/pointing
device.
Indicator 3
The student will create various forms of text (newsletters,
advertisements, certificates, brochures, resumes).
Indicator 4
The student will demonstrate good sentence structure.
Indicator 5
The student will demonstrate proficiency in the use of punctuation
and capitalization.
Indicator 6
The student will demonstrate the ability to proofread text
using tools such as spell checker or online thesaurus.
Indicator 7
The student will understand the implications of the copyright
law as it applies to the use of DTP.
Indicator 8
The student will identify DTP resources such as manuals, users
groups, magazines, clip art, books on lay-out and design, and software
tools.
Indicator 9
The student will use application software manuals.
Indicator 10
The student will perform the following computer functions: a.
format a disk. b. create backups. c. use the filing structure of the
operating system subdirectories or folders) to save and consolidate
files.

Indicator 1
The student will identify and use different types of storage
devices used in DTP.
Indicator 2
The student will identify and use input devices that can be
used in DTP (scanner mouse, digitizer pad).
Indicator 3
The student will describe output quality of various printers
used in DTP.
Indicator 4
The student will use a laser printer and associated consumable
supplies.
Indicator 5
The student will identify and use available software support systems,
i.e. 800 numbers, local organizations, clubs, periodicals, etc., for
troubleshooting and problem solving.

Indicator 1
The student will state capabilities that word processing software
should have for DTP.
Indicator 2
The student will state capabilities that graphics software
should have for DTP paint, draw, object oriented).
Indicator 3
The student will state capabilities that page layout software
should have for DTP.

The student will distinguish between types of graphic formats
(paint, object-oriented, draw, TIF, EPS).
Indicator 5
The student will use editing features of software applications
used in DTP graphics, word processing, layout).

The student will demonstrate mastering use of the following

Type Selection
Indicator 1
The student will identify the units of measure typically used
in DTP (point sizes, picas, centimeters, inches).
Indicator 2
The student will adjust leading, perform kerning, and adjust
letter spacing in a DTP document.
Indicator 3
The student will distinguish among the typefaces used in DTP
(such as helvetica palatine, times roman).

Document Design
Indicator 1
The student will identify the factors used to apply principles
of document design.
Indicator 2
The student will use various types of design elements used
in DTP (boarders, headlines, columns, line tools, graphics, etc.)
Indicator 3
The student will manipulate graphics to perform enhancements
(cropping, sizing, distorting, etc.).
Indicator 4
The student will arrange in order the steps in the design process.

Layout
Indicator 1
The student will demonstrate ability to stack/layer text and
graphics.
Indicator 2
The student will describe how use of document-size commands

The student will match document-size commands to their correct
effect on multi-page documents.

The student will use the place function of page layout software
to import text from a file or graphics from a file.
Indicator 5
The student will identify software tools used in DTP that will
allow the exporting of text from the page layout software.
Indicator 6
The student will copy/paste text or graphic, cut/paste text
or graphic, move a graphic within page layout software.

Indicator 1
The student will check, edit, and revise for correct information,
appropriate emphasis, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
