To prepare students for entry level jobs or additional education in the business industry.

Benchmark 1

Computer Literacy

Indicator 1

The student will perform power-up and power-down procedures.

Indicator 2

The student will respond to operating system dialogue.

Indicator 3

The student will demonstrate the function of each part of the keyboard.

Indicator 4

The student will use the proper techniques for all key reaches (including numerics).

Indicator 5

The student will name, save, and retrieve files to/from various locations.

Indicator 6

The student will create back-up files.

Indicator 7

The student will print documents using various print options.

Indicator 8

The student will proofread to produce error-free documents.

Indicator 9

The student will care for storage media and computer.

Indicator 10

The student will troubleshoot a word processing problem by obtaining assistance from help screens and printed manuals.

Benchmark 2

Vocabulary

Indicator 1

The student will demonstrate ability to use spell check, thesaurus, and grammar check.

Indicator 2

The student will apply the correct spelling, pronunciation and syllabication of frequently used and business-related words.

Indicator 3

The student will apply rules for plurals, possessives, prefixes and word endings.

Indicator 4

The student will demonstrate proficiency in the use of a dictionary.

Benchmark 3

Document Processing

Indicator 1

The student will key letters in personal, block, modified block, and simplified formats on plain, letterhead, and special-sized stationery.

Indicator 2

The student will key envelopes using the latest address styles recommended by postal officials.

Indicator 3

The student will key letters with special features such as attention or subject lines; enclosure, mailing, personal, copy, or special cover notations; second page headings, etc.

Indicator 4

The student will key reports in MLA, unbound, leftbound, and topbound formats.

Indicator 5

The student will key reports using endnotes, footnotes, and textual citation formats.

Indicator 6

The student will key special pages for manuscripts/reports such as title page, content page, bibliography/reference page, letter of transmittal, etc.

Indicator 7

The student will key tabular material with leaders, boxes, rulings, and other special features.

Indicator 8

The student will key employment documents such as resume, application letter, follow-up letters, application forms, etc.

Benchmark 4

Computer Functions

Indicator 1

The student will demonstrate proficiency in basic text formatting (cap lock, bold, underline, italics, center, flush right, tabs, etc.)

Indicator 2

The student will demonstrate proper usage of text entry features (deletion, temporary margins, left margin release, hanging indent, new page headers, footers, etc.)

Indicator 3

The student will demonstrate proper editing features (reveal codes, inserting/deleting embedded commands, type over, block deletion, move, copy, paste, etc.)

Indicator 4

The student will demonstrate ability to do line and page formatting (right justification, center page top to bottom, paper size, page numbering, margins, etc.)

Benchmark 5

Editing and Correcting Documents, Records and Files

Indicator 1

The student will proofread documents for content, format, and typographical errors.

Indicator 2

The student will move (rearrange) text.

Indicator 3

The student will search and replace text.

Indicator 4

The student will insert text.

Indicator 5

The student will rename files.

Indicator 6

The student will prepare new document from existing documents.

Indicator 7

The student will delete text, files or records from storage.

The student will apply principles of typography (styles/sizes).
