Benchmark 1

Singing and/or playing alone and in groups a varied repertoire of music.

Indicator 1

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in singing expressively on pitch and in rhythm.

Indicator 2

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences singing from memory a varied repertoire of songs representing genres and styles from diverse cultures.

Indicator 3

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences singing and/or playing easy rhythmic, melodic, and chordal/harmonic patterns (i.e., ostinatos, borduns, etc.) on classroom instruments while maintaining a steady beat.

Benchmark 2

Expressing music through movement.

Indicator 1

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in keeping/moving to the beat and strong beat using body percussion.

Indicator 2

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in creating/improvising appropriate movement to various rhythms, sounds, and styles of music.

Indicator 3

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in demonstrating dance movements appropriate to various styles of music.

Indicator 4

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in creating/improvising or demonstrating movement to various forms of music (AB, ABA, Rondo)

Standard 2 Knowledge and Analyzing

Benchmark 1

Reading and Notating Music.

Indicator 1

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in identifying by sight whole, half, quarter, and eighth notes, as well as corresponding rests.

Indicator 2

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences using a system (e.g. Kodaly syllables, numbers, lines or solfege) to read simple pitch and rhythm notation in songs.

Indicator 3

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in identifying duple and triple meters.

Indicator 4

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in recognizing common music symbols (treble clef, staff, etc.).

Indicator 5

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in identifying melodies that move up or down, by step, skip or repeated tones.

Benchmark 2

Analyzing and evaluating music and music performances.

Indicator 1

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in identifying the sounds of a variety of instruments, as well as children's voices and male and female adult voices.

Indicator 2

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in identifying simple music forms when presented aurally (AB, ABA, Rondo, etc.).

Indicator 3

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in listening to and discussing aural examples of various styles of music.

Indicator 4

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in distinguishing between high and low pitches, loud and soft, fast and slow, upward and downward movement, long and short sounds.

Indicator 5

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in identifying melodic or rhythmic phrases as being the same or different.

Indicator 6

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in explaining personal preferences for specific musical works and styles.

Benchmark 3

Understanding relationships between music, history, culture, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts.

Indicator 1

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in listening to and/or analyzing aural examples of music from various historical periods and cultures.

Indicator 2

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in presenting subject matter of various disciplines through the context of music.
