Benchmark 1

Playing alone or in groups a varied repertoire of music.

Indicator 1

By the end of 6th grade, students will be able to: demonstrate appropriate instrument care, assembly and proper playing position.

Indicator 2

Play pitches of basic range in tune with good tone, using proper breath support and embouchure or appropriate percussion technique.

Indicator 3

Demonstrate an understanding of basic musical symbols and terms by performing accurate articulations, dynamics, rhythm, and pitch with a steady pulse.

Indicator 4

Demonstrate proper stage presence and performance etiquette.

Benchmark 2

Expressing music through movement

Indicator 1

By the end of the 6th grade, students will be able to: demonstrate pulse through physical movement while playing.

Indicator 2

Demonstrate simple conducting patterns.

Indicator 3

Demonstrate rudimental marching skills.

Standard 2 Knowledge and Analyzing

Benchmark 1

Reading and notating music.

Indicator 1

By the end of the 6th grade, students will be able to: Read whole, half, quarter, eighth, and dotted notes and rests in basic meters.

Indicator 2

Sight-read accurately at the beginning level.

Indicator 3

Identify and define standard notation symbols for pitch, rhythm, dynamics, tempo articulation, and expression.

Benchmark 2

Analyzing and evaluating music and music performance.

Indicator 1

By the end of the 6th grade, students will be able to: use appropriate terminology in explaining music, music notation, musical instruments and music performances.

Indicator 2

Identify the sounds of a variety of instruments.

Indicator 3

Evaluate the quality of own and others' performances by applying specific criteria appropriate for the style of music.

Benchmark 3

Understanding the relationships between music, history, culture, the other arts, and other disciplines outside the arts.

Indicator 1

By the end of the 6th grade, students will be able to: identify the historical and cultural background of the repertoire studied.

Indicator 2

Identify ways in which the principles and subject matter of other disciplines are interrelated with those of music.
