Benchmark 1

Reading and Notating Music.

Indicator 1

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in identifying common music symbols and traditional terms referring to dynamics, tempo, and articulation and then interpreting them correctly in performance.

Indicator 2

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in reading whole, half, quarter, eighth, sixteenth, and dotted notes and corresponding rests in basic meters.

Indicator 3

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in using standard rhythmic notation to record musical ideas.

Benchmark 2

Analyzing and evaluating music and music performances.

Indicator 1

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in identifying the sounds of a variety of instruments, as well as children's voices and male and female adult voices.

Indicator 2

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in identifying simple music forms when presented aurally (AB, ABA, Rondo, etc.).

Indicator 3

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in demonstrating perceptual skills by answering questions about, and by describing aural examples of music of various styles of music.

Indicator 4

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in using appropriate terminology in explaining music, music notation, music instruments and voices, musical performances, and personal preferences for specific musical performances.

Indicator 5

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in evaluating work progress and adjusting according to established music principles.

Benchmark 3

Understanding relationships between music, history, culture, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts.

Indicator 1

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in listening to and/or analyzing aural examples of music from various historical periods and cultures.

Indicator 2

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in describing roles of composers and musicians in various music settings, historical periods, and cultures.

Indicator 3

The student has been introduced to and/or had experiences in presenting subject matter of various disciplines through the context of music.
