In the event of severe weather, the Superintendent may choose to close the District. When there is an indication of possible inclement weather, the Superintendent monitors the forecasts and consults with:

  • The National Weather Service

  • The District’s Transportation office

  • Superintendents of other area school districts

  • Pittsburg State University

  • City of Pittsburg

The Superintendent determines whether students can safely be transported to and from school and if staff can arrive at school safely. The Superintendent tries to decide whether to open on time or close schools by 9:00 PM the evening before or by 5:30 AM on the morning of. However, there may be times when the decision must be made later.

When the District remains open during inclement weather and families are concerned, it is their right to keep their child home. If families choose to keep their child home, please notify your school building.

In the case of a change to normal school operation due to inclement weather, staff and families will be notified in several ways:

  • District Website: provides the first notification of school closings and other cancellations. This will appear as a pop-up message on any page of all school websites.

  • Email, Phone Call & Text Message: Phone, email and text messages are sent to school families and employees when classes are canceled, delayed, or students are released early. This will be sent to the information we have on file in Powerschool. If you do not receive these communications, please contact your school building to confirm your contact information is correct.

  • Social Media: Information will be posted on the district’s Facebook and Twitter as the last form of communication.

  • Radio & TV: Local stations share announcements on air and their websites. Please note that we need to have control of when another organization displays this information.

Please note you WILL NOT be notified if school remains in session, you will only receive the notifications above in the case of a change to normal school operation.

  • Dress your child to protect against wind and cold.

  • Buses may be a few minutes late. Please wait as we safely run every route.

  • Alternate bus stops may be in effect due to road conditions. Bus riders on alternate routes are notified directly by Transportation Services.

  • It is your right to keep your child home in inclement weather. If you choose to keep your child home, please use the school attendance line to notify school personnel.
