At Pittsburg Community Middle School you can find academic excellence inside the walls of each classroom. Outside of class, the excellence continues through students' interests, passions, and talents. PCMS offers over 25 different extracurricular activities for students to be involved in.
Meet the Dragon Esports team, just one of the many groups at PCMS. This group was formed in 2019 by PCMS Computer Applications/ Graphics teacher, Joseph Hugo and USD 250 Technology Integration Specialist, Jamie Howard for students to have a space to compete in video games in an educational setting.
Dragon Esports currently competes in Minecraft and Rocket League. Their season is year-long split into casual club plat and competitive league play. Casual club play begins in the fall. During this time any student is welcome to play once a week after school. The competitive season begins in January, students meet once a week to practice for league play which begins around March.
“Dragon Esports isn't just about playing games, but also about telling our story,” Hugo said. “We have several students working behind the scenes as graphic designers and videographers.”
Last year, the Rocket League team won the Middle School Esports League National Championships over 300 other middle schools from across the United States. The same team will be headed to defend this title at semifinalists next week.
“We want to wish our scholar gamers ‘good luck and have fun!’” Hugo said.
