PCMS Wrestling Highlight

Meet the Pittsburg Community Middle School Boys and Girls Wrestling teams! This fast-growing program has made an incredible impact on our Dragons. With 64 student-athletes hitting the mats this season, wrestling has quickly become one of the most popular sports at USD 250!

Both teams opened their season earlier this month with victories over Fort Scott at the annual Frisco Trail Dual, hosted this year at PCMS. This event is always exciting for the school, as students and staff pack the gym to cheer on the wrestlers, creating an electric atmosphere to kick off the season.

Boys Wrestling Head Coach Rob Johnson believes that wrestling is a unique sport that provides new lessons for athletes that can’t be found anywhere else.

I firmly believe that wrestling is the toughest sport you can participate in at the school level. It is a battle both mentally and physically. You have to be aggressive, decisive, and have the grit to push through while someone is constantly putting physical pressure on you,” Johnson said. “Unlike team sports there is no one coming to help you. Unlike other individual sports, in wrestling someone is physically trying to subdue you for at least 1-2 minutes without a break.”

Johnson says he looks forward to another great season of Dragon wrestling and fully expects the team to improve each time they step on the mat.

“We are always a very competitive team and represent ourselves well from a wins and losses standpoint, but the things that I am most proud of are the several compliments I have received about our behavior and cleanliness in the stands or on the bus rides to and from our competitions,” Johnson said.

Girls Wrestling Head Coach Tambree Davis describes her season as “fast and furious” with eight events in just three weeks. Coach Davis is proud of the growth the program has seen over the years.

“Girls wrestling has grown significantly in the past five years across the nation, and Dragon Nation is no exception. Before having our own team we only had a handful of lady Dragons wrestle; in the two years of having our own team we have had a team of 20 both years,” Davis said. “It takes a confident and brave person to be able to compete in wrestling. Our Lady Dragon wrestlers are a sight to see and continue to bring pride to Dragon Nation!”
