Caden Mitchell, 5th-Grade Westside Elementary student, won the Kansas Arbor Day Poster Contest titled "Kansas Trees are Terrific...and Energy Wise!". This contest paired with classroom curriculum supports Kansas College and Career Ready Standards for Science and also integrates science and engineering practices from the Next Generation Science Standards.
The goal of the contest is to develop and increase an appreciation and awareness of the important role that trees play in the environment, our state, and in our quality of life. Each year, more than 1,000 students and 50 educators participate in this annual contest.
Caden was presented his framed winning poster at an assembly with his classmates, teachers, and family. In honor of Caden's accomplishment, the City of Pittsburg also planted a tree at Westside, a proclamation was presented by Mayor Patrick O’Bryan, and each 5th-grade student was given a tree to take home and plant in their yard.
Way to go, Caden!
