USD 250 to Start August 26, Return to School Plan Approved
USD 250 Pittsburg Community Schools Board of Education voted 7-0 yesterday evening to delay the start of school to August 26, 2020 to allow an extra week of preparations and professional development for the staff.
The Board of Education also reviewed the USD 250 Return to School Plan, which will offer in-person instruction along with remote options for the 2020-21 school year. The approval of this plan passed with a vote of 7-0. Before highlighting the Return to School plan's key points, here are some important details for the school year :
Currently: Online enrollment at usd250.org/dragonenroll
Currently: Free/Reduced Lunch Application at myschoolapps.com
August 7: Remote Learning Application Due
Prior to the Beginning of School: All immunizations and boosters must be up to date
August 26: First day of school for all students
The full Return to School Plan will be released to parents on July 29, 2020 along with the Remote Learning Application. Students must be enrolled online before applying for Remote Learning. Here is a look at the three models of learning that will be available:
On-Site Learning Model: This is traditional, face-to-face instruction with enhanced health and safety guidelines in place.
Transportation: There will be disinfecting procedures, and masks will be required of all students riding the bus, bus drivers and monitors.
Instruction: Technology devices will be provided, focus on mastering prioritized competencies/standards, emphasis on teaching devices
Buildings: Multiple levels of disinfecting procedures and personal protective equipment for staff will be provided, as well as additional sanitation materials in each classroom.
Face coverings will be required of all K-12 students and staff when social distancing cannot be maintained. There will be temperature checks, frequent hand washing, as well as hand sanitizer, will be available.
Remote Learning Model: This will be 100% online and will look different than USD 250's Continuous Learning Plan that was implemented last spring. Parents/guardians must apply for the Remote Learning model by August 7, 2020.
Students are taught and assessed on the same standards and competencies as On-Site students.
Students must have a personal daily connection with their teachers. Such connections can be through telephone and/or interactive video conferencing. Email may also be used as a supplement.
Students must maintain a daily log of activities signed by the student and parents and submitted to the school district. Minutes for all activities, whether directly working with a teacher, or independently on assignments or assessments, should total 410 minutes per day.
Participation in extracurricular and co-curricular activities will not be allowed unless students are able to participate fully in a virtual setting.
Hybrid Model: This model will only be used in the event that Local Health Officers or administrations deem it to be necessary, for students or families placed in quarantine due to COVID symptoms, or exposure due to travel. Each student may return to the On-site model after release. This model allows for a student to continue their education while at home and return to the classroom setting.
USD 250 is fully committed to working together with our public to prepare for and reopen our schools. There is no one-size-fits-all solution and this will not be easy work, but we will always make the difficult decisions that continue to keep our students, staff, and community safe.
The full Return to School Plan will be released to staff on July 28, 2020 and then to parents on July 29, 2020.
