In February of this year, seven Pittsburg High School students scored a 30 or higher on the ACT carrying on a tradition of success. The ACT is a standardized test used for college admissions covering four academic skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and scientific reasoning. It also offers an optional direct writing test.

A Composite score and each test score from the four academic skill areas range from 1 (low) to 36 (high). The Composite score is the average of your four test scores, rounded to the nearest whole number.

PHS offers a challenging and robust college-preparatory curriculum involving many dual-credit and AP course offerings that enable students to compete academically at a high level with students across the nation. This preparation paired with the dedication of staff and students has yielded great success:

  • Over the past two years of state-provided ACT assessments for juniors, 22 PHS students scored in the Top 10 % of all students nationwide.

  • 46 PHS students scored in the Top 20% of all students nationwide.

  • 110 PHS students (or just over ½ of all students tested) scored in the Top 50% of all students nationwide.

“Our students challenge themselves in their academic course choices to prepare themselves for the next level.” Says Kelynn Heardt, Pittsburg High School Principal.  “These results are proof of that hard work and dedication to their education.  We are extremely proud of them and their achievements.”

PHS offers classes every year from the PowerPrep company that has been instrumental in offering Science ACT prep sessions for students. In addition,  many students take advantage of the ACT prep opportunities offered through ACT itself.

Dual Credit courses are available with Pittsburg State University in Advance Comp, US History, College Algebra, World History, Speech, and General Literature. As well as AP courses in US History, English Language and Composition, English Literature Composition, and US Government. Students are also given the opportunity to take courses with Labette Community College.
