Mamma Mia!

Pittsburg High School Theater will produce a hit musical next week that has captivated over 60 million people worldwide! More than 40 students will bring to life “Mamma Mia!” Feb. 17-19 at PHS.

The musical hits of the ‘70s-era Swedish pop group ABBA — from “Dancing Queen” to “Super Trouper” to “Gimme Gimme Gimme” — will be played by a live pit band and will help tell the hilarious story of a young woman's search for her birth father on a Greek island paradise. On the eve of her wedding, three men from her mother's past return to the island they last visited 20 years ago.

It's a tale of love, laughter, and friendship, with colorful costumes and high-energy dance numbers, says director Caitie Almond. Collaborators include teachers Cooper Neil (pit band), Susan Laushman (vocal director), and Chuck Boyles (technical director), as well as PHS alumni Mollie and Maggie Stephens (choreography) and Todd and Phillip Hoover-Holthus (costumes).

"We guarantee it won't take long before you're tapping your feet, humming along, and wanting to get up out of your seat and dance!" said Almond.

The pit band is comprised of Susan Laushman (piano), Andy Goris (keyboard/synths), Cooper Neil (guitar), Josiah Fletcher (bass guitar), and Jack Stefanoni (drumset). 

The cast includes Kate Thueson (Sophie), Ella Rhues (Ali), Mallory Womeldorff (Lisa), Sophie Casper (Donna), Aunyx Estes (Tanya), Corin Cooper (Rosie), Nityan Doodnauth (Sky), Will Williams (Pepper), Tate Campbell (Eddie), Keller Erwin (Harry Bright), Trent Toth (Bill Austin), Ben Shawn (Sam Carmichael), and Ben Bolinger (Father Alexandrios). The featured dance ensemble includes Bea Aragon, Jay-Lynn Bingham, Grave Cho, Lauren Coomes, Willie Jones, Lexie Miller, and Alex Muckala. The chorus includes Zach Baker, Max Battaglia, Ben Bolinger, Lucy Brooksher, Alyssa Cosens, Chloe Costello, Olivia Doodnauth, Jared Jones, AnaSofia Moss, Jacob Thueson, and Sarah Winzer.

The crew includes Ashley Singh as assistant director, and Ace La Valla, Mela-Nicole Ross, Sam Winzer, Katie Davis, Kathleen Frech, Athennah Jones, Ryan Carlile, Allison Frech, Davin McMurry, Homer Oferrell, Jansi Parrado, Ashleigh Henderson, Hailey Coberley, Cassidy McMurry, Gavin Steier, Gwendolyn Ouellette, Mason Smith, Matthew Strode, Ro Mize, Caitlin Costello, Cynthia Garcia, Chloe Hart, and Hannah Sandford in numerous technical roles, from stage crew to sound and lighting design to spotlight operators to makeup crew.

Performances will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 17, 18, and 19, and 2 p.m. Feb. 19, in the PHS Auditorium.
