Household Economic Survey

HOUSEHOLD ECONOMIC SURVEY

USD 250 Pittsburg Community Schools is informing our families of a new component in our enrollment process. This new element, recently directed by the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE), is replacing the National School Lunch Program(NSLP ) application process. In the past, students whose annual household income was at or below the poverty level would receive a free breakfast and lunch or a reduced rate. However, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA has decided to extend free meals for all students in the 2021-2022 school year.

While we believe that free meals for students is an excellent benefit for our families, this change also creates a problem for school districts. The information previously gathered through the NSLP process is used not only to determine the socio-economic status of students within our district but is also directly tied to funding that supports services for students identified as At-Risk such as instructional coaches, social workers, counseling services, language translators, Communities in Schools, Jobs for America’s Graduates, etc. The information is also used to determine what payment a parent will provide for enrollment and device fees.

In lieu of the NSLP form, KSDE has requested that all parents/guardians complete the Household Economic Survey for the upcoming school year as a part of a student’s enrollment. It is imperative that our families complete this survey so that we can accurately attain this important information. With your help, we can continue to fund essential programming in our schools.

We ask that you fill out the survey in addition to the online enrollment process, so that we may complete your child’s enrollment. The Household Economic Survey is available to families in paper and electronic form for your choice/convenience. You may also call the USD 250 Central Office and someone will be available to take your information by phone and fill out the form for you. ALL information is completely confidential and cannot be used for any other purpose. Should you choose to complete the paper form, please submit the completed form to your oldest child’s school building.

Why should I fill out the HES Survey?

IS THIS THE SAME AS FREE & REDUCED LUNCH?

In the past, students whose annual household income was at or below the poverty level would receive a free breakfast and lunch or a reduced rate. However, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA has decided to extend free meals for all students in the 2021-2022 school year. In lieu of the Free & Reduced Lunch form, KSDE has requested that all parents/guardians complete the Household Economic Survey for the upcoming school year as a part of a student’s enrollment.

HOW IS THIS INFORMATION USED?

In order to receive funding, USD 250 must generate a report for KSDE indicating the number of families in various household income categories. The funding we receive as a result of this report is directly tied to support services for students identified as At-Risk such as instructional coaches, social workers, counseling services, language translators, Communities in Schools, Jobs for America’s Graduates, etc. The information is also used by USD 250 to determine what payment a parent will provide for enrollment and device fees.
